Skylight is TikTok’s open-source challenger

Skylight’s launch taps into growing fears over TikTok’s future, promising an open, interoperable home for short videos.

TikTok’s uncertain status in the U.S. has paved the way for Skylight, a new competitor backed by Mark Cuban, launching on the App Store and Google Play.

Skylight aims to be a creator-friendly, open alternative to TikTok, giving it a key advantage should TikTok face a ban in the United States.

Like TikTok, Skylight enables users to create, edit, and share short, vertical videos with interactions like swipes, likes, and follows; however, Skylight distinguishes itself by allowing videos to be viewed across multiple platforms, not just within a single app.

Built on the AT Protocol, the same technology as Bluesky, Skylight extends its reach to nearly 34 million Bluesky users, who can engage with Skylight content without needing separate accounts.

The concept for Skylight originated with travel influencer and co-founder Tori White, who, fearing a potential TikTok ban, documented the app’s development on TikTok to attract attention. Mark Cuban discovered the app this way after expressing interest in funding a TikTok alternative built on the AT Protocol.

Skylight plans to introduce features such as duets, audio clips, and stitched video responses, alongside new ways to customize content feeds.

Skylight has the support of Mark Cuban and Leslie Feinzaig’s Graham & Walker Venture Fund.
