Google has introduced a significant new feature to its Gemini AI chatbot that allows it to recall details from previous conversations, enhancing user interaction. This memory function enables Gemini to provide responses based on past discussions, such as answering questions or summarizing earlier chats, according to a recent update from Google.

Previously, users had to manually search through their chat history to find past conversations, which could be cumbersome, especially without a search function available. This limitation required users to scroll through conversations to locate the specific chat, creating challenges when chats were spread over different Gemini models.

Google is finally addressing user concerns

The introduction of memory addresses concerns, particularly for those who use Gemini for emotional support or assistance, as the lack of memory previously decreased the experience’s effectiveness.

The ability to reference old chats in a more straightforward manner has been a highly requested feature in online communities discussing chatbot usage, often aiming for virtual companionship. Google had already provided a way to pin important chats for easier access.

The new memory feature is currently available only in English and requires users to have a Google One AI Premium subscription. This feature will be accessible on both web and mobile platforms of Gemini.

Subscribers also gain access to the new experimental models within the Gemini 2.0 series, which were released recently. Google has indicated that support for additional languages is expected in the near future, along with expanded access for Enterprise and Workspace Business customers.

Google states:

“Starting today, Gemini Advanced can now remember your past conversations to provide more useful answers.”

Users can now add new commands to earlier discussions or projects without starting over.

Deep Research makes Gemini your personal assistant

Additionally, Google plans to roll out the Gemini Deep Research system to both Android and iOS applications. This system is designed for Gemini Advanced subscribers and serves as a personal research assistant. It can analyze prompts, break them into related questions, and generate comprehensive reports swiftly, available for editing in Google Docs.

Recently, Google announced that “Gemini 2.0 is now available to everyone,” releasing updates to Gemini 2.0 Flash for general access through Google AI Studio and the Gemini API in Vertex AI. The company has described this version as allowing developers to create custom systems. An experimental version called Gemini 2.0 Pro has been released, specifically designed for coding and complex inquiries, targeting Google AI Studio, Vertex AI, and Gemini Advanced users.
