Microsoft has released a new preview update, KB5050094, for Windows 11 24H2 on Tuesday, which aims to fix multiple bugs affecting the operating system, including issues arising from the January Patch Tuesday update.

Microsoft releases preview update KB5050094 for Windows 11 24H2

KB5050094 addresses audio issues where USB headphones, as well as other devices connected through a digital-to-analog converter (DAC), failed to produce sound, displaying the error message: “Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API.” The update also resolves a USB audio driver issue that prevented certain devices from starting.

Additionally, the update fixes problems related to USB cameras, where Windows failed to recognize them when powered on. However, it does not address issues with built-in webcams.

Gamers using Windows 11 24H2 previously encountered errors with AutoHDR, which caused game colors to display incorrectly. The new patch allows for the correct use of AutoHDR, enhancing gameplay by converting standard dynamic range (SDR) content to high dynamic range (HDR).

KB5050094 also resolves a long-standing issue where the mouse cursor would disappear during text selection or editing, a problem reported since October. Another fix addresses the failure of cumulative Windows updates to install properly and resolves errors encountered when connecting to Windows 11 workstations via Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Gateway. Furthermore, the update rectifies distortion issues in screenshots taken with the Windows Snipping Tool when using multiple monitors with differing scaling settings.

Additional improvements

The update brings several other enhancements, including allowing regular users to change the time zone without requiring admin rights. The cursor now remains visible without becoming transparent, and mouse movement is smoother as stuttering has been eliminated. Task Manager also opens more quickly following this patch.

As a preview update, KB5050094 provides insight into the forthcoming Patch Tuesday updates, enabling Windows administrators to evaluate new fixes. If successful, the update will automatically roll out to all users on the second Tuesday of the following month.

To download the optional update manually, users should navigate to Settings, select Windows Update, and click the button to check for updates. If KB5050094 is available, users can select it for installation. Alternatively, users can access the Microsoft Update Catalog, download the MSU file for KB5050094, and install it by double-clicking the file.
