Apple is set to enhance its AirTag tracking device significantly in 2025, introducing a second-generation model with improved functionality. The AirTag 2 is expected to feature triple the current tracking range, utilizing advanced technology for better security and privacy measures.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new AirTag will utilize an upgraded ultra-wideband chip similar to that found in the iPhone 15, allowing users to locate belongings from a distance of approximately 30 to 90 meters, a notable increase from the current 10 to 30 meters. This improvement is anticipated to enhance the ease of finding lost items, making it particularly beneficial for travelers, especially with its recent integration with airlines like United.

Apple to launch AirTag 2 with advanced tracking features

In addition to the extended tracking range, the AirTag 2 will incorporate several enhancements aimed at increasing user safety. Gurman reports that Apple intends to make the built-in speaker more difficult to remove, addressing concerns related to unwanted tracking and stalking. This follows prior criticisms about the potential misuse of AirTags in such scenarios.

Despite these improvements, the aesthetic design of the AirTag is not expected to change significantly. Gurman indicated that the new version will resemble the existing model. Users, however, may hope for improved battery life or a more compact design that fits better into wallets, although there is no confirmation of such changes.

Apple’s Proxima chip could be the star of smart home tech

The anticipated launch of the AirTag 2 positions the release approximately four years after the original AirTag debuted in April 2021. Apple’s decision to wait until mid-2025 reflects a strategy to enhance the product’s appeal through meaningful upgrades rather than rapid iteration.

As markets continue to demand greater functionality in personal tracking devices, Apple’s upcoming offering aims to meet consumer expectations for both usability and safety. With these modifications, the AirTag 2 could redefine how users engage with location technology, ultimately benefiting a broad range of applications beyond casual usage, including travel and logistics.

With upcoming advancements and ongoing updates in tracking technology, it remains to be seen how Apple will further refine the AirTag experience before its next release.
