Honda is recalling nearly 206,000 SUVs due to a potential fuel leak that could increase the risk of fire. This recall affects 2023 and 2024 Passport models and select 2023 through 2025 Pilot SUVs. The automaker announced the move following an installation error that may lead to the fuel filler neck detaching from the filler pipe during a crash. Honda has received one warranty claim related to this issue but reported no injuries or fires.

Honda recalls 206,000 SUVs due to fuel leak risk

The recall covers nearly 206,000 vehicles, specifically certain 2023 and 2024 Honda Passports and 2023 through 2025 Honda Pilots. Honda’s internal documents revealed that a glitch in the manufacturing process has created an incomplete connection between the fuel filler neck tube and the fuel filler pipe. This incomplete connection poses an increased risk of gasoline leaking in the event of a crash, potentially leading to fires.

Affected vehicles were manufactured between February 2023 and May 2024. While the automaker has not reported any incidents of fires or injuries connected to the defect, the precautionary recall aims to prevent future risks. Honda encourages owners of the impacted vehicles to take them to authorized dealerships for inspection and repair once they receive notification.

Honda plans to send notification letters to affected vehicle owners starting January 6, 2024. Upon visiting dealerships, owners can expect complimentary inspections and, if necessary, proper connections between the fuel filler neck and the fuel filler pipe due to the manufacturing flaw. During the inspection process, dealership staff will ensure that all affected vehicles comply with safety standards.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published Honda’s recall documents, which clarified the nature of the malfunction and actions to be taken. It remains unclear whether additional investigations into manufacturing processes will follow as the automaker reviews this issue and addresses safety concerns.

The Honda Pilot has been a staple in the automaker’s lineup for many years, while the Passport was reintroduced in 2019, both targeting the SUV market. The recall comes at a time when consumer confidence can be easily shaken by safety issues, making it imperative for Honda to act swiftly. Owners of both models are urged to monitor their mail for details regarding the recall and to schedule any required inspections promptly.

Despite the potential severity of the situation, thus far, there have been no reported injuries linked to the fuel filler neck issue. Honda’s single warranty claim reported sheds light on the rarity of such incidents, but highlights the importance of proactive measures in the automotive industry.

Honda has collectively sold a significant number of vehicles in the U.S. this year, with nearly 127,700 sales of the Pilot and around 29,200 sales of the Passport.
