Spotify is expanding access to free managed accounts for children under 13 in several markets. Parents and guardians on any plan in the US, UK, Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands can now open a managed account for their child.
Free managed accounts are available in select markets and will be rolled out to Canada, New Zealand, and numerous countries in Europe and Latin America soon. These accounts were first introduced as part of the Premium Family plan in October 2022.
Managed accounts provide younger users a way to use Spotify under parental oversight, including personalized recommendations and playlist creation. The accounts are audio-focused, with videos and Canvas looping visuals disabled by default.
Additionally, several privacy and safety measures are implemented. There are no messaging functions, and profiles are unsearchable and private. Users cannot upload a profile photo but can select an avatar. Explicit content is filtered automatically, and parents can control which songs and artists are accessible.
By having their own profiles, younger users can improve the accuracy of personalized recommendations, which benefits parents’ Spotify Wrapped results. Parents can set up a managed account by opening the menu from the home screen of the Spotify app, selecting “Add account,” choosing “Add a child under 13/create a managed account,” and following the prompts to set content preferences.
