OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, a new desktop application designed to assist with work-related tasks. This announcement marks a significant milestone in the company’s development of a “super” app that has been in the works since March. ChatGPT Work functions as a general-purpose productivity agent, combining resources from ChatGPT, Codex, and the Atlas web browser.
Powered by OpenAI’s new GPT-5.6 models, which faced a delayed release due to regulatory reasons, users will primarily access ChatGPT Work via an updated version of the ChatGPT app. This centralized platform allows users to manage tasks and projects effectively. Users can initiate tasks from mobile devices and track their progress on desktop or through web browsers.
ChatGPT Work includes various features aimed at streamlining productivity. Users can schedule tasks, enabling the agent to work remotely on assignments. Through the desktop app, the agent can perform actions like moving files and accessing multiple applications, enhancing its functionality.
A unified plugin directory has been introduced, enabling connections to various favorite applications. Users can use commands like “@” to access information and context from these applications, with ChatGPT also providing relevant app recommendations during use. The system can automate routine tasks, such as reviewing Slack updates and summarizing weekly messages.
<p”You remain in control of how ChatGPT works with you,” OpenAI stated, emphasizing users can dictate access and action permissions. The redesigned desktop app further includes a built-in browser and capabilities to create web applications through a feature called Sites, which facilitates the development of tools like live dashboards and project trackers.
During the rollout announcement, OpenAI also indicated the discontinuation of Atlas, with deprecation targeted for August 9, according to James Sun, who worked on the Atlas project. The rollout of ChatGPT Work commenced today, with completion expected within the next 24 hours. Free account users can access this new agent through the available desktop app for Mac and Windows, while Plus and Pro subscribers can utilize ChatGPT Work via both the web client and desktop app.
