Rockstar Games will offer free upgrades for Grand Theft Auto V starting June 18 for players with the game on PS4 or the digital Xbox One edition. Owners can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S versions at no cost.
The current-gen version, first released in March 2022, features visual enhancements and performance boosts, including faster character switching. Players can also transfer their save data and online progress while upgrading.
PC players will receive a free upgrade to the Enhanced edition, which contains the same improvements as the current-gen console versions. Additionally, the Enhanced edition includes PC-exclusive features like ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination.
This announcement comes as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S console ownership has increased significantly compared to four years ago. However, some players speculate that these upgrades may signal Rockstar’s plans to eventually shut down GTA Online on PS4 and Xbox One, similar to its earlier actions regarding the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2021.
As players await further news on Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to be released on November 19, Take-Two reported that marketing for the game will intensify this summer. A third trailer for GTA VI, the first in over a year, is expected to be released soon.
