Midjourney is developing a full-body ultrasonic scanner capable of completing a scan in 60 seconds. The company plans to operate spas where users can undergo this scanning process, which is unrelated to its previous AI image generation projects.

The Midjourney Scanner will submerge users in water at a rate of 2 inches per second while passing through a ring composed of half a million squares that emit and record ultrasonic waves. This technology aims to produce a 3D body map comparable to conventional MRIs but significantly faster.

Midjourney announced the scanner as part of its initiative called Midjourney Medical. Ahmad Abbas, who joined the company in late 2023 after working at Apple, leads the project. The company stated it has aspirations similar to an MRI while aiming for a casual experience akin to visiting a spa.

Midjourney is collaborating with Butterfly Network, a manufacturer of handheld ultrasound devices. The companies signed an agreement in November 2025 to secure exclusive rights to Butterfly’s ultrasound-on-chip technology.

Over the next year, Midjourney plans to fine-tune its algorithms, conduct research trials, and develop a second-generation Scanner. It aims to open its first spa in San Francisco next year, with the next step being FDA approval of the scanner’s diagnostic capabilities.

By 2028, Midjourney seeks to expand the scanner’s availability to more cities and launch a third-generation machine that will utilize custom silicon for enhanced image quality. The company expressed its ambition to have 50,000 scanners worldwide by 2031, stating that increased early imaging could potentially prevent 30 percent of all deaths and reduce healthcare costs by 50 percent.
