Microsoft is testing updates for Windows 11 that will enhance customization options for the Start menu and taskbar, with rollouts beginning today for Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel. The changes aim to address user complaints about the size of the Start menu.
Insiders will have the option to select either Small or Large versions of the Start menu, with size preferences maintained consistently across displays. This comes after the Start menu size nearly doubled following a November update last year, prompting Microsoft to acknowledge user feedback on the issue, reported by Windows Latest.
The update will also introduce section-level toggles for Pinned, Recommended, and All, allowing users to control which sections of the menu are displayed. Users can configure their Start menu to show only pinned apps by deactivating the Recommended and All sections. Additionally, a new control will enable users to disable file recommendations specifically in the Start menu.
For privacy concerns, Insiders will be able to hide their name and profile picture in the Start menu, which can be particularly useful when sharing screens or streaming. In terms of taskbar customization, Microsoft will allow repositioning on any edge of the screen, including the top, bottom, left, or right.
Icon alignment options will include top-aligned and centered for left or right taskbar positions, and left-aligned and centered for top or bottom positions. To join the Windows Insider program, users need to register with their Microsoft account, which grants them access to preview new Windows builds and provide feedback to assist in refining features prior to wider deployment.
