Micron Technology plans to build a second manufacturing facility in Taiwan at the Tongluo site it acquired from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp, the U.S. memory chipmaker said.
The expansion aims to increase supply of advanced DRAM products, including high-bandwidth memory, to meet growing demand from artificial intelligence applications. The move reinforces Taiwan’s position as a critical hub for semiconductor production amid global competition for AI chip manufacturing capacity.
Micron completed the acquisition of PSMC’s Tongluo P5 site, the company said. The new facility will match the scale of Micron’s existing fabrication plant in Miaoli County, Taiwan.
Construction will begin by the end of fiscal 2026, according to the company’s statement.
The announcement follows broader industry trends as chipmakers scale production to serve AI markets. Nvidia-backed Scintil Photonics recently began shipping AI laser chips, while smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi and Apple continue expanding their device ecosystems.
