Google’s Gemini Deep Research tool can now access data from Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Chat, provided users grant explicit permission. This development follows a November 5 announcement by Google.
Concerns emerged regarding privacy and security after reports indicated Gemini’s capability to read Gmail messages. However, this functionality is contingent upon user consent. Gemini is among popular AI research tools developed by Google.

To enable Gemini Deep Research to integrate information directly from Gmail, Drive (including Docs, Slides, Sheets, and PDFs), and Google Chat, users must actively “select Deep Research from the Tools menu in Gemini on desktop and select your sources.” This clarification addresses initial reports lacking context.
Users maintain full control over data access. This is not an automated data collection process. Users are not obligated to utilize Gemini or permit it to access any data. Disabling Gemini for Gmail, Chrome, Docs, Drive, and Photos is an available option. Further information is accessible through the Google Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
Google advises against entering confidential information that users would not want reviewed or used by Google for service improvement, including machine-learning technologies. Gmail serves approximately 2 billion daily users, making it a target for AI-driven threats.
