Netflix has launched a new studio, INKubator, focused on creating generative AI content, primarily in the form of short-form animated offerings, according to The Verge. The studio is currently hiring for key positions, including a head of technology, which suggests that it will take time before any content is ready for viewers.
The team’s initial goal is to produce animated shorts and specials, although there are indications of plans to eventually expand into longer-form content. A job listing stated that the team aims to “expand from shorts to longer-form content” at some point.
This move follows Netflix’s history of embracing AI technology, as evidenced by its use of AI in advertising and its acquisition of AI startup InterPositive, founded by Ben Affleck. Additionally, Netflix is set to focus on vertical video for its mobile app, which could serve as a platform for INKubator’s generative AI creations.
