According to The Verge, Xbox Chief Executive Asha Sharma addressed rising concerns about the Game Pass subscription service in a leaked memo, acknowledging it has become “too expensive for players.”
Sharma emphasized the importance of Game Pass, stating it is “central to gaming value on Xbox,” but she also indicated that the current pricing model will evolve. The memo reflects a potential shift in strategy following two price increases within 15 months, raising questions about affordability and future adjustments.
Sharma outlined a vision for a more flexible Game Pass system, although she admitted that it will take time to test and implement changes. “We need a better value equation,” she stated.
The upcoming April update for Game Pass will include indie titles such as Hades 2 and a new project from Double Fine, alongside major releases like the Call of Duty remake. The addition of high-profile franchises is believed to be a contributor to the service’s higher price, as they could potentially diminish Microsoft’s revenue from separate game sales.
While the memo has generated some optimism about a possible turnaround for Xbox, the implications of new pricing strategies and service structures remain uncertain. Changes that complicate the subscription tiers could hinder user interest and engagement in Game Pass.
