Apple is preparing to introduce a budget-friendly MacBook featuring a range of colorful design options, targeting students and enterprise users. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, the company has tested light yellow, light green, blue, and pink for the upcoming device, alongside traditional silver and dark gray. The laptop is expected to be priced between $699 and $799, utilizing iPhone-derived chips like the A18 Pro to achieve this lower cost. Apple plans to utilize a new manufacturing process for aluminum shells rather than cheaper materials. The device is scheduled for an announcement at an event in March.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicated that Apple has actively trialed six distinct colorways for the entry-level machine, encompassing both vibrant and classic aesthetics. The tested palette includes light yellow, light green, blue, and pink, supplemented by the company’s standard silver and dark gray options. Gurman noted that the final retail selection will likely not include all six tested variations. Apple’s recent design history supports the move toward a diverse color spectrum. The company refreshed the iMac in 2024 with a total of seven distinct color options. Furthermore, the latest iteration of the MacBook Air replaced the traditional space gray finish with a sky blue alternative, signaling a willingness to experiment with flashier aesthetics across its portable lineup.

To meet the aggressive price target of $699 to $799, Apple is reportedly shifting its component sourcing strategy. The company plans to port over chips originally designed for its iPhone lineup, specifically utilizing the A18 Pro processor. This chip was first introduced with the iPhone 16 Pro Max, providing a modern architecture that allows for cost reduction through shared component development. Industry analysis anticipates that Apple will implement compromises regarding internal specifications, port selection, or display technology to reach the necessary margin thresholds.

Despite the focus on cost reduction, reports suggest Apple will maintain a premium build quality for the chassis. Gurman reported that the company will employ a new manufacturing process to craft aluminum shells for the affordable MacBook. This approach avoids the use of cheaper materials such as plastic, preserving a premium tactile experience. Consumers expecting to view the final retail color options will not have to wait long for the official reveal. Gurman stated that the budget MacBook is slated to be announced during an event scheduled for March.
