Valve is testing a new low-power download mode for the Steam Deck, allowing the handheld to complete active downloads with its display turned off. The feature, which is currently available in the Steam Deck’s Beta and Preview channels, addresses a long-standing user request for a way to download games and updates without leaving the screen on.
With the new update, when a user presses the power button while a download is in progress, a new dialog box will appear. This prompt asks if the user wants to continue downloading with the screen off or enter full sleep mode. If “Continue” is selected, the Deck enters the new low-power state.
While in this mode, if the user presses a button or moves the device, a new status screen will appear showing the download’s progress. From this screen, the user can choose to either fully wake the Steam Deck or let it continue downloading with the display off.
The feature is enabled by default when the Steam Deck is plugged in. Users can also opt-in to use it while on battery power through the device’s settings. However, if the battery level drops below 20 percent while in this mode, the Steam Deck will automatically go into full sleep to conserve power.
This new solution addresses previous concerns from Valve about power consumption and heat. When the Steam Deck OLED launched, Valve hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat noted that the device burns a “substantial amount of power” during downloads, raising concerns that a user might accidentally leave a hot, actively-downloading Deck in a bag. The new display-off mode appears to be Valve’s solution to balance download convenience with power and thermal management.
