OpenAI is about to add watermarks to all ChatGPT images

The APK teardown revealed a potential "Save without watermark" option, hinting that paid users might be able to remove the watermark

OpenAI is developing new features for ChatGPT, including a potential watermarking system for AI-generated images. Code suggests some users may have the option to save images without a watermark.

An APK teardown of ChatGPT v1.2025.196 beta, conducted by Android Auhtority, revealed references to an “image-gen-watermark-for-free” and a “Save without watermark” option. While APK teardowns indicate potential future features, their public release is not guaranteed.

In April 2025, Tibor Blaho on X noted the “ImageGen watermark” within ChatGPT’s code, with the string “image-gen-watermark-for-free” suggesting its application to free-tier users. The current beta version includes a functional “Save without watermark” feature. This option appears in the three-dot menu alongside existing choices like Edit, Select, Save, and Share for generated images.

The feature was activated on the free tier of ChatGPT during testing, which could be attributed to its developmental stage. Current indications suggest that all ChatGPT-generated images may include a watermark. Paid subscribers could have the ability to save these images without the watermark. Alternatively, all users might have this option, with the process potentially designed to deter casual use through added friction points. OpenAI has not officially announced this feature, and aspects of its implementation may change or be withdrawn.
