Apple is preparing its marketing, sales, and retail teams for the release of new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models featuring M4 chips, expected in March. This information comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Apple prepares for March launch of new MacBook Air models
In his Power On newsletter, Gurman noted the reduction of current MacBook Air inventory in stores, indicating an imminent launch. Although it was initially believed that the MacBook Air would be the first hardware launch of the year, this was superseded by the recent launch of the iPhone 16e.
Gurman, expressing confidence, stated that Apple will begin selling the new MacBook Air models by March “at the latest.” However, he did not clarify whether the release would occur early or later in the month. He earlier remarked that the machines would be introduced “within weeks.”

Apple accidentally confirmed the upcoming M4 MacBook Air models in December, when the macOS Sequoia 15.2 update revealed references to unreleased devices labeled “Mac16,12” and “Mac16,13,” specifically noting the “MacBook Air (13-inch, M4, 2025)” and “MacBook Air (15-inch, M4, 2025).” Gurman mentioned that, as is customary leading up to a launch, Apple is preparing its marketing and sales teams while clearing out existing retail stock.
Both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models are anticipated to launch simultaneously, similar to their release last year. The MacBook Airs have generally shared specifications with the low-end MacBook Pro since the Apple Silicon transition, offering a more compact design with fewer ports and no cooling fan. The base model of the 14-inch MacBook Pro features 10-core CPUs, 10-core GPUs, and 16GB of RAM, giving insight into the expected performance of the upcoming Air models, which are anticipated to include the ability to connect to two external displays simultaneously with the lid open.
Currently, the Mac Studio and Mac Pro remain the only products in the lineup powered by M2 chips, without M4 updates. Gurman projects the Mac Studio’s transition to M4 chips to occur between March and June, while the Mac Pro update is expected between June and fall.
