Google may soon introduce its Adaptive Charging feature, currently available on Pixel phones, to its Pixel Watch lineup, according to Android Authority. An APK teardown of the Pixel Watch Management Service app hints at this development, suggesting the feature aims to extend the watch’s battery life by analyzing user charging habits.

Google’s Adaptive Charging may come to Pixel Watch

The Adaptive Charging feature on Pixel phones optimizes battery longevity by learning how users charge their devices. It prevents overcharging by delaying the battery charge to 100% until just before the user typically unplugs it. This is particularly beneficial for those who charge their phones overnight, which can otherwise be harmful to battery health. The recent findings indicate that this feature could similarly be applied to Pixel Watches.

New code strings in version 2024.10.14.685782837 of the Pixel Watch Management Service system app reference the Adaptive Charging capability. The app manifest mentions a new permission related to this feature:

<code>&lt;uses-permission android:name=”com.google.android.wearable.pixel.pdms.permission.ADAPTIVE_CHARGING_SERVICE”/&gt;</code>

While the exact operation of Adaptive Charging on the Pixel Watch remains unspecified, it is expected to function similarly to its implementation on Pixel phones.

Currently, it’s unclear when Google will officially roll out the Adaptive Charging feature for the Pixel Watch. The code does not detail which models will support it or when users can expect its availability. The integration of this feature seeks to address battery longevity, which is an ongoing focus for Google, especially concerning the Pixel Watch series and its comparatively shorter battery life.

Adaptive Charging could prove beneficial for users who do not wear their watches overnight, enabling them to maintain optimal battery health while still ensuring their devices are fully charged when needed. This feature may potentially expand to other Wear OS devices, including models from Galaxy and OnePlus in the future.
