Following the impressive debut of OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, Google showcased its own advancement with a demo of Gemini, highlighting a promising future for AI.

Google’s show off right before the event

Google unveiled a new video featuring a prototype of Gemini operating on a Pixel device, using live video and spoken commands to deliver information. The footage seems to have been recorded during the preparations for Google I/O, which begins on May 14.

In the demonstration, the Pixel phone running Gemini AI is shown on stage, which is being set up for Google I/O. When asked what it thinks is happening, the AI correctly identifies it as preparations for a large event. When letters are displayed on a screen, Gemini identifies them as relating to Google I/O and provides a brief overview of the upcoming event.

Similar to OpenAI’s recent ChatGPT showcase, Google’s Gemini demo impresses with the natural flow of the conversation. It’s easy to forget that the voice from the Pixel device isn’t human. The interaction feels as smooth as a dialogue between friends.

While it’s challenging to determine which AI model performs better without direct testing, both are undeniably impressive. These demos inspire both excitement and a bit of apprehension about the future of AI. OpenAI claims that the technology will only continue to improve.

Despite the excitement around Google’s demonstration, the company has faced criticism in the past for making AI demos appear more impressive than they actually were. We’ll need hands-on experience with these Gemini updates to confirm their effectiveness. If the video accurately represents its capabilities, the competition in AI is just beginning.

Google I/O is scheduled to begin today at 10 a.m. PT. Check out this link to see what to expect from the event.
