Uber has expanded its autonomous vehicle options today by launching robotaxi services in Dallas through a partnership with Avride. The initial deployment utilizes a small fleet of Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles which will operate with a human safety driver in the front seat, though the company plans to transition to fully driverless operations in the future. Uber aims to eventually scale this presence to hundreds of autonomous vehicles within the Dallas market.
Riders in the area can now adjust their preferences within the Uber app to increase the likelihood of being paired with a robotaxi. The service remains optional; if a user is assigned an autonomous vehicle, they can choose to switch to a traditional rideshare driver. This launch follows the partnership agreement from October 2024 and reinforces Uber’s strategy of aggregating third-party autonomous fleets, joining similar initiatives with Waymo in Austin and Atlanta, Lucid in the Bay Area, WeRide in Abu Dhabi, and Momenta in Europe.
