Pinterest rolls out AI fashion boards for personalized outfits

Pinterest’s new AI tools turn fashion Pins into interactive collages and shoppable boards, moving the platform closer to its goal of becoming an AI shopping assistant.

Pinterest announced on Monday AI-powered upgrades to its boards, aiming to personalize user experiences in the U.S. and Canada through features like outfit collages and curated boards, as part of its strategy to function as an AI-enabled shopping assistant.

The upgrades introduce “Styled for You,” an AI-driven collage feature designed specifically for users interested in fashion. This tool enables individuals to generate outfits by drawing from their saved fashion Pins. Users begin by selecting elements from their collection, and the system assembles them into cohesive visual arrangements. Interaction occurs through simple gestures: tapping on a particular item within the collage prompts the display of AI-recommended saved Pins. Users then swipe to explore these suggestions, allowing for easy mixing and matching of clothing and accessories. This process tailors results to each user’s style preferences, based on their pinning history and interactions on the platform.

In parallel, Pinterest is testing “Boards Made for You,” which creates personalized boards through a combination of editorial curation and AI-powered suggestions. These boards compile content centered on current trends, such as popular clothing styles and seasonal looks. They also include weekly outfit inspirations, providing users with fresh ideas for attire on a regular basis. Shoppable content forms a key component, linking directly to purchasable items from various retailers. Once implemented, these boards will integrate seamlessly into users’ home feeds, appearing as prominent recommendations upon opening the app. Additionally, notifications will deliver them to inboxes, ensuring users receive updates without manual searching.

The initial experimentation with these AI features targets users in the United States and Canada. Pinterest plans a gradual rollout over the next few months, expanding access as testing progresses and feedback is incorporated. This phased approach allows the company to refine the tools based on real-world usage patterns.

Pinterest states that these enhancements transform traditional boards, previously used mainly for organizing Pins, into dynamic platforms for exploration, shopping, and outfit discovery. This development supports the company’s broader objective of establishing itself as an AI-enabled shopping assistant, a vision articulated by the CEO during the second-quarter earnings call. The platform has previously incorporated AI into its recommendation algorithms, which suggest Pins based on user behavior, and into visual search capabilities, where users upload images to find similar items.

Amid these advancements, Pinterest maintains measures to manage AI-generated content. In April, it outlined a policy to label images created or modified by AI, providing transparency about content origins. The company also added user controls, enabling individuals to adjust settings and decrease the visibility of AI-generated Pins in their feeds, thereby customizing their experience to prioritize human-created material.

Complementing the AI initiatives, Pinterest will introduce new tabs for sorting Pins into distinct categories. These tabs become accessible when users view boards from personal profiles, facilitating organized navigation. The global rollout of these sorting features is scheduled for the coming months, extending beyond the initial AI testing regions.
