OpenAI has banned multiple ChatGPT accounts linked to suspected Chinese government entities after users requested proposals to monitor social media, according to its latest threat report. The company acted because the requests violated OpenAI’s national security policy.
The users specifically asked ChatGPT to design social media “listening” tools and other monitoring systems. In separate actions, OpenAI removed Chinese-language accounts that used the platform for phishing and malware operations. These accounts also explored automation through China’s DeepSeek platform. Additionally, the firm banned accounts tied to suspected Russian-speaking criminal groups that utilized the chatbot to aid in creating malware.
Since launching its public threat reporting system in February 2024, OpenAI has disrupted more than 40 malicious networks. The company reported that its models have not provided threat actors with new offensive capabilities.
