Fight for the Future launched a nationwide campaign on September 25, designating a VPN Day of Action to prevent potential legislative restrictions on virtual private networks. The digital rights organization is mobilizing support to protect VPN accessibility and user privacy amid growing legislative challenges.
The campaign brings together key players in the digital privacy sector, including the VPN Trust Initiative – composed of NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN – and the VPN Guild, which includes Amnezia VPN. They have released an open letter urging politicians to preserve VPN technology and defend online privacy rights.
Recent age-verification laws have sparked concerns about potential VPN restrictions. Currently, half of U.S. states have implemented laws requiring internet users to verify their age through government-issued IDs or credit card checks. These regulations have unexpectedly triggered a significant increase in VPN sign-ups, particularly notable in the United Kingdom, as users seek to protect their personal information.
Michigan is at the forefront of controversial legislation, considering a bill that would ban both adult content online and VPN usage. If passed, it would become the first U.S. state to outlaw virtual private networks. This potential ban mirrors restrictions already in place in countries like China, India, and Iran, which heavily limit or completely prohibit VPN services.
Lia Holland, campaigns and communication director for Fight for the Future, emphasized the critical importance of VPNs for individuals living under authoritarian regimes. “VPNs are vital for people to avoid censorship and surveillance and have become an essential tool in exercising basic human rights,” Holland stated. The organization argues that potential VPN restrictions would have a significant chilling effect on personal freedoms, particularly for marginalized communities.
Legal experts provide additional perspective on the challenges of implementing VPN bans. Mario Trujillo from the Electronic Frontier Foundation notes that such restrictions would be practically impossible to enforce. “VPNs are widely used by employees across various sectors to connect to company networks,” Trujillo explained. He further criticized the approach, suggesting that lawmakers should focus on comprehensive privacy regulations rather than blanket bans.
To support their campaign, Fight for the Future has developed strategic resources for concerned citizens. The organization provides detailed templates and helps supporters identify local lawmakers to contact. These materials are accessible alongside the open letter, enabling direct civic engagement in the fight to protect digital privacy rights.
