iPhone 17 Pro may swap titanium for aluminum

Tipsters indicate Apple is considering aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro frame citing titanium’s high cost and challenges with heat dissipation as factors driving the potential change.

Apple may replace titanium with a more cost-effective alternative for the iPhone 17 Pro models, according to recent reports. This potential material change follows the introduction of titanium frames in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max series.

Tipsters, including FixedFocus, indicate that Apple is considering an aluminum frame as the substitute for titanium in the 2025 iPhone lineup. The shift is reportedly driven by cost considerations. Titanium, while offering a premium aesthetic, lightweight design, and scratch resistance, is an expensive component. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max were the initial Apple handsets to incorporate titanium, moving away from the stainless steel used in prior iterations. This design material was also featured in the iPhone 16 series.

Aluminum frames possess properties similar to titanium, notably their lightweight nature. However, aluminum exhibits lower strength and can experience reduced durability under conditions of high stress and elevated temperatures. Despite these characteristics, the material offers a significant cost advantage. Reports suggest Apple may be prioritizing other technological capabilities, which could lead to a compromise in the design materials for forthcoming iPhone models.

Beyond pricing, heat dissipation is cited as another primary reason for potentially discontinuing titanium use. Previous iPhone models have frequently encountered extreme overheating issues. Aluminum is considered a more suitable material for thermal management, positioning it as a potential solution for Apple’s challenges with device overheating.
