Apple plans dual-layer OLED iPhones with blue-red-green split

While rivals like Huawei and Honor already use dual-layer screens, Apple’s version may optimize power and screen efficiency.

Apple is exploring tandem OLED display technology for future iPhones, following its debut of dual-layer displays in the iPad Pro (2024). The company is considering this screen technology for its flagship handsets after a one-year wait.

The Elec reported Apple’s exploration of advanced tandem display solutions. Apple first introduced a dual-layer OLED device with the iPad Pro (2024). Competitors like Huawei and Honor utilized dual-layer OLEDs for their high-end smartphones last year.

The Honor Magic 6 was the first device in China to feature a six times more durable dual-layer OLED screen. Huawei subsequently launched the MatePad Pro 12.2 with this display technology, later incorporating it into the Mate 70 RS Ultimate.

A dual-layer, or Tandem OLED, comprises two or more overlapped light-emitting layers. This technology increases brightness and reduces power consumption, extending device battery lifespan.

The Elec indicated Apple typically requires at least two years for product mass production planning and release. Given the dual-layer OLED plan is under consideration, Apple will likely integrate this technology into iPhones by 2028.

Apple intends to use a “simplified” tandem OLED for its iPhones. These displays feature two layers: one containing only blue subpixels, and the other incorporating both red and green subpixels.

LG supplied simplified tandem OLEDs to Apple last year. Apple is also evaluating Samsung as a potential supplier for displays.
