Low-level firmware

Low-level firmware is typically stored in Read-Only Memory (ROM) or one-time programmable memory. Its primary role is to ensure that hardware functions as designed, handling the basic operations needed for the device to initialize and run.

High-level firmware

This type of firmware is generally located in flash memory, allowing for easier updates and more complex interactions. High-level firmware often manages more sophisticated tasks compared to low-level firmware. Updating this type typically enhances device performance or adds new features.

Subsystem firmware

Subsystem firmware operates within specific parts of a device, such as a CPU. It often functions semi-independently, meaning it can be updated separately from the main firmware. This allows for more specialized control and functionality in complex systems.
