Google has begun the rollout of the third beta build of Android 16, which features a new Battery Health tool that users may find beneficial, according to 9to5Google.

Google rolls out Android 16 beta 3 with new battery health tool

The Battery Health feature can be accessed through the Battery dashboard in the Settings app. This tool provides an overview of the battery’s electrochemical condition, presenting users with a percentage indicating the battery’s current charge capacity compared to a new battery.

Smartphones typically contain lithium-ion batteries that undergo frequent charge-discharge cycles, leading to chemical degradation over time. Such degradation reduces the battery’s ability to retain charge, as rechargeable batteries are considered consumables with a finite lifespan. Factors like impedance and battery voltage are influenced by the battery’s chemical age, affecting phone performance.

Before the implementation of Android 16 Beta 3, many Android smartphones lacked a way to notify users about their battery status. With the new update, the Battery Health dashboard offers a percentage figure similar to that found in iPhones. Google states that a battery health metric above 80% is optimal for device performance, while a percentage below this threshold may necessitate contacting the smartphone manufacturer for possible battery replacement based on warranty status.

This feature not only allows users to monitor battery health but also provides suggestions for optimizing battery performance. The dashboard includes adaptive charging capabilities that slow charging speeds overnight, filling the battery to full capacity shortly before the user typically wakes up. Users can also limit charging to 80% of the battery’s maximum capacity.

The Battery Health dashboard additionally offers access to guides and articles that help users achieve a balanced approach between device performance and battery longevity. Recommended practices include reducing background activity from features like Now Playing, enabling adaptive brightness, and managing app background activity.
