PositiveGrid, a manufacturer of digital music technology, has integrated artificial intelligence into its Spark series amplifiers with SparkAI, an AI-powered tone generator. Using deep learning and transformer-based models, SparkAI processes extensive audio datasets to analyze tonal characteristics and generate realistic guitar sounds. The system applies self-supervised learning techniques, allowing it to adapt to different playing styles without requiring manually labeled training data.

Unlike traditional guitar amplifiers that rely on analog circuitry and fixed digital presets, SparkAI processes input signals dynamically. It analyzes a guitarist’s playing style in real time, adjusting tone generation based on detected nuances in technique, genre, and instrument response. This AI-driven approach enables a level of customization that is not possible with conventional amp configurations.

Transformer-based modeling for real-time tone adaptation

SparkAI’s tone modeling process is based on a technique commonly used in natural language processing. The AI system converts sound data into discrete units, or “tokens,” which represent specific tonal attributes such as pitch, harmonics, and timbre. Transformer models then process these tokens to generate new, highly responsive guitar tones.

Self-supervised learning allows SparkAI to refine tone generation over time. By continuously analyzing large volumes of recorded and live-played guitar tracks, the AI builds an evolving understanding of different playing styles.

PositiveGrid has incorporated SparkAI into its Spark series amplifiers, which connect to a mobile application for tone customization. The system provides access to a library of AI-generated tones, allowing users to modify and refine sound profiles without external hardware adjustments. Features such as Smart Jam and Auto Chords leverage the same AI framework, providing dynamic backing tracks and chord detection for real-time play assistance.

With over 500,000 users worldwide, PositiveGrid has positioned itself among the top three amplifier brands in North America. The company has received industry recognition, including awards from the NAMM Show and Guitar World, for its advancements in digital tone modeling.
