“Scale or stall”: Site reliability engineer Vladyslav Haina on why DataOps is no longer optionalModern systems demand speed, structure, and automation. I’ve seen this across the board — whether building infrastructure from scratch in startups or leading automation at a major European financial institution. One thing’s clear: DataOps isn’t a luxury. It’s the foundation for scaling, adapting, and staying competitive.

Today, companies rely on data not just to understand the past, but to make real-time decisions and anticipate what’s next. But that only works if data systems are reliable. Fragile pipelines, manual processes, and missing documentation aren’t just inefficient — they slow you down and put the business at risk. That’s where DataOps comes in.

From bottleneck to engine: DataOps as a driver of agility

First, let’s talk speed. DataOps helps you make more data-driven decisions faster by reducing the time between data creation and business value. In practice, that means automated deployment, integrated monitoring, and rollback mechanisms across tools like Snowflake, MongoDB, and Airflow. At the bank, where I led the implementation of TOIL automation, this update proved to be a game changer. Picture this: we reduced deployment times from days to minutes by implementing CI/CD pipelines for both microservices and data pipelines.

This isn’t just about performance. It affects business agility too. Having reliable pipelines and automated quality checks helps teams launch new products faster, run experiments safely, and adapt to changing conditions without chaos. Without DataOps, every change becomes a risk. With it, change becomes part of the system’s design.

The hidden cost of ignoring it

The biggest cost of skipping DataOps isn’t always obvious at first. But it adds up quickly. Silent pipeline failures. Issues with data quality lead to bad decisions. Engineers spend hours debugging rather than building. Repetitive manual deployments that break under pressure. These are all symptoms of a system lacking automation, visibility, and ownership. I’ve seen organisations operating this way — firefighting constantly, afraid to change anything because no one is sure what will break.

DataOps, on the other hand, makes everything observable, repeatable, and accountable. At SolidMinds, we containerised data processing jobs, standardised pipelines using Airflow and DataProc, and implemented lineage tracking with OpenLineage. That didn’t just stabilize the system — it created trust, which is often a very critical component for scaling a company.

Treating data like a product

One mindset shift I always try to introduce is this: treat data as a product. That means giving it the same discipline we apply to software: versioning, testing, observability, continuous delivery.

When data pipelines are treated as code — reviewed, monitored, and deployed through CI/CD — they become far more reliable. You get clear ownership, better documentation, and SLAs or SLIs around freshness, latency, and quality. Whether you’re building an ML model, delivering a report, or feeding a customer-facing dashboard, that discipline ensures your data is shippable, maintainable, and scalable.

At SolidMinds, we faced schema drift and inconsistent environments that caused pipelines to work in development but fail in production. To fix this, we introduced automated validations, environment consistency checks, and rollback capabilities — essentially applying CI/CD principles to data workflows. This brought stability and helped us align data processes with modern software delivery practices.

Governance and compliance without the effort

In regulated environments, good data management isn’t just smart — it’s required. DataOps helps integrate governance directly into the workflow instead of treating it as an afterthought.

That includes audit trails through Git or pipeline logs, automated checks for policy violations, and access controls defined in code via Terraform or Snowflake roles. These tools allow teams to move quickly without compliance gaps that might lead to legal and reputational risks.

At the bank, one of the most complex challenges we faced was reducing deployment risk in a highly regulated, multi-region setup. We solved this with progressive delivery (canary releases), automated policy enforcement, and service-level health checks built into our delivery pipeline. It helped lower our change failure rate and recovery time — and gave leadership more trust to speed up release cycles.

A culture of shared accountability

DataOps isn’t just a toolset you can share with your colleagues — it’s a cultural shift, a way of doing business. It brings together data engineers, DevOps, ML teams, and analysts through shared tooling, common metrics, and aligned incentives.

Shared dashboards in Grafana, alerts in Slack, and CI/CD pipelines with built-in validations all contribute to a “you build it, you run it” mindset — now extended to data. Embedding data engineers into the dev teams has been one of the most effective practices I’ve seen. It creates a shared sense of ownership and eliminates the throw-it-over-the-wall mentality that slows everything down.

At SolidMinds, each team initially had their own standards, tools, and processes. Orchestrating all of that into a unified, automated ecosystem took time — and diplomacy. But once that shift happened, it became much easier to onboard new services, scale existing pipelines, and maintain system integrity across the board.

Balancing automation with human judgment

Now, none of this means everything should be automated. In fact, I believe it’s crucial that some aspects of my job remain manual.

For example, incident analysis and root cause exploration still require human intuition, especially in multi-system environments. Automation can detect anomalies, but understanding them in context is a different matter. The same goes for onboarding new services or designing system architectures — which benefit from collaborative, manual planning. If you rely too much on automation here, you might scale poorly designed designs too soon.

There are even cases where automation can be harmful — like auto-restarting failing pods without surfacing the root issue. These can mask real problems until they escalate. In other words, automate what’s repeatable and low-risk, but leave room for human judgment where nuance matters.

Looking ahead

The boundaries between development, infrastructure, and data are fluid. Bringing these disciplines together, DataOps enables speed, reliability, governance, and scale.

Whether you’re in a startup moving fast or an enterprise navigating compliance and complexity, investing in DataOps isn’t just a technical decision — it’s a strategic one. It’s what allows teams to adapt, experiment, and grow — without breaking things in the process.

Ignore it, and you’re left firefighting. Embrace it, and you’ll build systems that can truly evolve with the business.
