A leaked screenshot sent shockwaves, hinting at OpenAI’s ChatGPT 4.5 — a powerhouse with groundbreaking capabilities. But was it genuine excitement or a well-crafted ruse? The drama unfolded on social media platforms, with a Reddit thread at the epicenter, swiftly removed by moderators. Bindu Reddy, CEO of Abacus.AI, who initially shared the excitement, started having second thoughts, citing discrepancies in the leaked information.

But the plot thickened. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, stepped onto the virtual stage to address the chatter. Was ChatGPT 4.5 about to revolutionize the AI landscape, or was this just another case of misinformation gone viral?

ChatGPT 4.5 leak explained

The purported ChatGPT 4.5 leak created a whirlwind of excitement and speculation within the AI community. On December 14, a screenshot surfaced on social media platforms, including Reddit and X, suggesting that OpenAI was on the verge of unveiling its latest and most advanced language model, GPT 4.5.

The leaked information described GPT 4.5 as a cutting-edge model with multi-model capabilities spanning language, audio, vision, video, and 3D. The tantalizing details promised advancements in individual modalities and highlighted the model’s proficiency in complex reasoning and cross-model understanding. Such a leap in capabilities would mark a significant stride forward in the evolution of language models, generating considerable buzz and anticipation among AI enthusiasts.

However, as quickly as the excitement spread, skepticism arose. The original source of the ChatGPT 4.5 Leak, a Reddit thread on r/OpenAI, was promptly removed by moderators. Users began scrutinizing the details in the screenshot, questioning the leak’s authenticity. This skepticism gained momentum when Bindu Reddy, CEO of Abacus.AI, who initially shared the leaked screenshot, cast doubt on its credibility. In a tweet, Reddy pointed out several inaccuracies in the details, suggesting that the leaked pricing information, in particular, was likely a fabrication.

Amidst the uncertainty, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, stepped in to clarify the situation. At X, Altman officially debunked the ChatGPT 4.5 Leak, confirming that the information circulating about GPT 4.5 was not legitimate.

While the GPT 4.5 leak turned out to be a false alarm, it sparked discussions about OpenAI’s future plans. The question of whether OpenAI is preparing to release GPT 4.5 or leapfrog to GPT-5 remains unanswered. The episode has added an air of mystery to OpenAI’s roadmap, leaving enthusiasts eagerly awaiting official announcements regarding the next iteration of the ChatGPT series.

History of GPTs so far

Here’s a concise chronology of the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) series:

  • GPT-1 (June 2018): OpenAI introduced the first iteration of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It marked a significant advancement in natural language processing and understanding.
  • GPT-2 (February 2019): Building on the success of GPT-1, OpenAI released GPT-2, a model with a staggering 1.5 billion parameters. Its ability to generate coherent and contextually relevant text raised concerns about its potential misuse, leading to a cautious release strategy.
  • GPT-3 (June 2020): OpenAI made headlines with the release of GPT-3, a giant with 175 billion parameters. GPT-3 showcased unprecedented language understanding and generation capabilities, enabling it to perform diverse tasks, from translation to creative writing.
  • GPT-3.5 (March 2022): While not an official release, improvements and fine-tuning continued. GPT-3.5 represented a refinement and optimization of the GPT-3 architecture.
  • GPT-4 (March 2023): OpenAI unveiled GPT-4, the next evolution in the GPT series. This model brought enhanced capabilities and performance compared to its predecessors, solidifying OpenAI’s position at the forefront of language model development.
  • GPT-4.5 (Not Confirmed): Amidst speculation and a “leaked” screenshot, rumors circulated about the potential release of GPT-4.5. However, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, debunked the claims, stating that there is no imminent release of GPT-4.5.
  • GPT-5 (In Progress): OpenAI has filed a trademark application for GPT-5, signaling ongoing efforts in the development of the next iteration. As of now, no specific release timeline has been provided.
