Artificial intelligence has evolved from research prototypes to the backbone of enterprise transformation. Few professionals have witnessed that transition as closely as Shaik Abdul Kareem. With over 12 years of experience in data science, machine learning, and cloud engineering, he has built solutions that span predictive analytics, connected mobility, financial resilience, and now enterprise generative AI.
From laying early foundations at NetApp, to building Verizon HUM into an industry benchmark for connected-car telematics, to helping Equifax rebuild trust post-breach, and most recently driving enterprise AI at eInfochips, Kareem’s journey captures the story of AI adoption in the 2010s and early 2020s.
Q&A with Abdul Kareem
Abdul, how did your career in AI and data engineering begin?
My career started at NetApp, where I focused on predictive analytics and cloud storage optimization. We built automated provisioning frameworks using REST APIs and applied predictive IOPS models to improve workload stability.
One of the major breakthroughs was intelligent tiering with NetApp FabricPool Intelligent tiering, which automatically shifted cold data to cheaper object storage like AWS S3 and Azure Blob. That reduced storage costs by ~20–40 percent. For me, it was an early proof that data science had to go beyond insights and into embedded, operational automation
The HUM platform at Verizon is still talked about as an industry benchmark. What was your role there?
HUM was Verizon’s connected-car service, launched nationwide in 2015. It combined OBD-II devices, LTE connectivity, cloud analytics, and mobile apps to deliver crash detection, predictive maintenance, and roadside assistance.
I designed the predictive maintenance engine, which analyzed telemetry from millions of vehicles daily. We used Apache Spark Streaming for distributed ingestion, Python and SQL pipelines for transformations, and anomaly detection methods to spot potential faults before they happened.
The system reduced breakdown-related service calls by 36 percent. More importantly, HUM scaled reliably to over a million subscribers within a few years. Its architecture became a reference point for connected mobility—showing how real-time analytics and machine learning could be embedded at consumer scale.
I think that’s why people call it a benchmark. HUM’s architecture was later reused in Verizon Connect and influenced early V2X platforms that use 5G for smart city and fleet management. To this day, many connected-car projects reference HUM as a baseline for low-latency, real-time telematics
You then moved to Equifax during a turbulent period. What did you focus on there?
At Equifax, I worked as a Senior Data Scientist from 2016 to 2020 during a time when the company was rebuilding trust after the 2017 breach. My responsibilities spanned two main areas:
- Predictive Modeling – We built fraud detection, credit risk, and churn models with TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, and R. I used autoencoders for anomaly detection, ANN (artificial neural networks) models for churn, and hybrid clustering for customer segmentation. We also incorporated geospatial data from Google Earth Engine to assess wildfire and flood risks which became vital for insured assets assessments.
- Large scale Cloud & Security Transformation – After the 2017 breach, Equifax invested heavily in cloud and security modernization efforts and I was part of this. I helped migrate more than 100 legacy systems into a hybrid AWS and GCP environment, focusing on building hardened architectures for ERP and Oracle BRM systems. We adopted Zero Trust principles (NIST SP 800-207), set up segmented VPCs, enforced IAM-based access controls, and implemented KMS-backed encryption across sensitive workloads. To close gaps exposed in the breach, I have automated patching with AWS Systems Manager and Ansible, achieving ~98 percent compliance within 24 hours of release.
We also embedded AI-powered anomaly detection directly into our security pipelines. That reduced incident response times by ~60 to 70 percent and improved resilience for regulated workloads. On the reliability side, I co-led the adoption of SRE practices such as SLAs, SLOs, error budgets, and golden signals. This cut MTTR by 70 percent and helped achieve 99.999 percent uptime for credit reporting services.
For me, this period highlighted that enterprise AI is not just about prediction. It is also about resilience, compliance, and trust.
Since 2020, you’ve been at eInfochips. What kind of systems have you been building there?
At eInfochips, I focus on enterprise ML infrastructure and early generative AI adoption using Google Cloud Platform.
- Infrastructure: Architected pipelines with Vertex AI, BigQuery, and Cloud Composer, automating model training and deployment.
- NLP Applications: Built Q&A systems, summarization engines, and chatbots using Hugging Face, TensorFlow, and PyTorch. Accuracy improvements ranged from 15–20 percent thanks to transfer learning and hyperparameter tuning.
- Generative AI: Fine-tuned GPT and BERT for enterprise datasets with LoRA and adapter based. We also built retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines combining Pinecone/FAISS vector DBs with embeddings, which cut document search latency by 40 percent.
- Enterprise copilots: Deployed internal assistants integrated with Vertex AI APIs. These copilots reduced manual workloads for operations and cut support response times by 30 percent.
One key outcome: our generative AI solutions lowered operational costs by about 30 percent. For enterprises, the real value wasn’t the novelty of text generation, but the ability to embed generative workflows securely and at scale
In 2022, generative AI was still early. How did enterprises react?
There was a lot of interest mixed with caution. Enterprises wanted to know: Can generative models be trusted with sensitive data? Will outputs be auditable?
We had to embed guardrails—data encryption, IAM role enforcement, and monitoring layers—into every workflow. The adoption story was strongest when we framed generative AI as augmentation, not replacement. For example, copilots that help customer service teams summarize policies or triage tickets. That’s where enterprises saw immediate productivity gains.
Having worked across telecom, finance, and technology, what technical themes repeat themselves?
Three stand out:
- Scale – Millions of telemetry events at Verizon, billions of transactions at Equifax, petabyte-scale enterprise data at eInfochips. All required distributed architectures like Spark, Databricks, and Kafka.
- Compliance-first design – In regulated industries, governance is as critical as accuracy. Every system had to align with GDPR, HIPAA, or NIST.
- MLOps maturity – Success is less about building one good model and more about pipelines: CI/CD, automated retraining, monitoring, and explainability. We invested in MLflow, TensorBoard, and Vertex AI to track models in production.
What excites you most about the future of AI, looking beyond 2022?
Generative AI was just starting to prove its value in enterprises. But the next leap will be toward what I call agentic AI—systems that not only generate but reason and act autonomously within workflows.
Even in 2022, we were experimenting with LangChain-style orchestration and multi-agent prototypes. Imagine an AI that can retrieve documents, summarize them, and trigger an approval workflow—all within guardrails. That’s the future I see unfolding over the next few years.
Finally, what advice would you give to younger engineers entering AI?
- Go deep before wide—master one area (NLP, computer vision, or data engineering) before chasing trends.
- Learn compliance—GDPR, HIPAA, NIST aren’t side notes; they’re design constraints in enterprise AI.
- Show business impact—always lead with outcomes. If your model reduces fraud losses by 20 percent or improves churn prediction accuracy by 15 percent, executives will listen.
That’s how you build credibility.
