EMC, a provider of IT storage hardware solutions, announced yesterday that it has acquired TwinStrata, an enterprise cloud storage company. Although the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, the acquisition will see TwinStrata’s cloud technology, CloudArray, integrated with the company’s VMAX3 products and will provide customers with “embedded cloud access capabilities.”

“We are looking to integrate CloudArray into the new VMAX3 enterprise data service platform to allow you to automatically tier workloads even more seamlessly for off-premise storage capacity expansion, data protection and disaster recovery,” said TwinStrata’s CEO Nicos Vekiarides in a letter.

The news of the acquisition is part of a host of upgrades EMC has announced recently. At the Redefine Possible event on Tuesday, it was revealed that the company has made improvements to its Isilon OneFS platform – the “industry’s first enterprise-grade scale-out Data Lake and new platforms with double performance” — and XtremIO. Moreover, VMAX3 will also run on the Hypermax operating system, which includes a storage hypervisor, and will let users direct backup information to EMC’s Data Domain unit.

EMC’s CEO David Goulden also commented on the news earlier this week:

“VMAX3 offers mass consolidation of existing workloads and today for the first-time infrastructure apps as well. The new family is also scalable and more powerful – we’ve gone from a few hundred virtual machines to few thousand,” he said.

“This, with Hypermax, lets you run things like cloud gateways directly in the VMAX platform [thus] allowing further consolidation. It will improve performance and resiliency and lower costs.”
