To follow-up on the 3 reasons why companies fail at big data, Harvard Business Review recently published an article on a very similar topic: How to get over your Big Data inaction. Phil Simon, the author, has his doubts that Gartner’s survey reveals accurate data about the percentage of companies deploying big data projects. He suggests many of those will either never reach maturity or do not have the necessary clout to succeed. Instead he offers four critical steps towards success:
- commitment – no commitment no impact
- data – no data no project
- tools – no new tools, no capacity to deal with data
- thinking of potential value that can be derived in more creative ways than a simple cost-benefit analysis in terms of cash
