Canon is announcing the EOS R6 Mark III, its latest full-frame mirrorless camera aimed at both photographers and videographers. The new model features a 32.5-megapixel sensor, an increase from the 24 megapixels in the previous generation. It is scheduled to launch on November 25th with a body-only price of $2,799. It will also be sold in kits with the RF 24-105mm STM lens for $3,149 and the RF 24-105mm L lens for $4,049.
The R6 Mark III introduces significant video upgrades, including the ability to record up to 4K at 120p and 7K at 60p RAW. It also supports full corner-to-corner open gate filming, providing extra flexibility for cropping in post-production. For video users, Canon has added a tally lamp, Canon Log 2 gamma settings, and a full-size Type A HDMI port, replacing the previous Micro HDMI port. The autofocus system has also been improved, allowing users to register a person’s face to ensure the camera prioritizes them during continuous tracking.
One notable hardware change is the move from dual SD card slots to an asymmetrical setup with one CFexpress Type B slot and one SD slot. This faster card format allows the R6 Mark III to capture longer bursts while maintaining the same 12 fps mechanical and 40 fps electronic shutter speeds as its predecessor, even with the higher resolution sensor.
Launching alongside the camera is a new lens, the RF 45mm f/1.2 STM. It is a compact prime lens with a very bright f/1.2 aperture, priced at $469.99 and expected to ship in early December. This is not an L-series lens, so it is not weather-sealed, and the lens hood will be sold separately for $59.99. According to a Canon representative, the lens relies on in-camera corrections to achieve its image rendering at its low price point.
