It was revealed yesterday that networking giant Cisco is in talks to acquire Private OpenStack cloud service innovator, Metacloud.

With an aim boost its strategy towards building the world’s largest global Intercloud – a network of clouds – Cisco has been mobilizing significant technology partners, service and cloud providers, integrating them to the Cisco Cloud Services architecture, which is based on OpenStack open source software for building private and public clouds.

According to Hilton Romanski, the senior vice president of Cisco Corporate Development.“Cloud computing has dramatically changed the IT landscape. To enable greater business agility and lower costs, organizations are shifting from an on-premise IT structure to hybrid IT – a mix of private cloud, public cloud, and on-premise applications.”

“The resulting silos present a challenge to IT administrators, as choice, visibility, data sovereignty and protection in this world of many clouds requires an open platform,” he continued. “We believe Metacloud’s technology will play a critical role in enabling our customers to experience a seamless journey to a new world of many clouds, providing choice, flexibility, and data governance.”

Metacloud co-founder, Sean Lynch, wrote in a statement, “Cisco believes, as we do, that policies, monitoring, management, and orchestration across your entire cloud and application portfolio should be seamlessly integrated.”

“Metacloud OpenStack will advance the Intercloud offering by being the interface to the end-developers and devops teams building, deploying, and operating hybrid cloud applications,” he added.

Scheduled to be completed by 2015 Q1, the acquisition will see Metacloud employees working with Cisco’s Cloud Infrastructure and Managed Services organization headed by senior VP, Faiyaz Shahpurwala. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
