This is the WhatsApp group chat feature we always needed

The update will allow users to see how many people are composing messages directly from the main chat list, without needing to open the conversation.

WhatsApp is developing a new typing indicator for group chats, recently observed by WABetaInfo in Android beta version 2.25.20.17. This feature aims to provide users with real-time information regarding the number of participants actively typing within a group conversation. The update addresses a common challenge in large group settings where discerning how many individuals are composing messages simultaneously can be difficult.

Previously, WhatsApp had updated its typing indicator across both individual and group chats. The present iteration displays a “typing” or “audio recording” visual directly within chat tabs, positioned beside the profile icon. This contrasts with older versions that required users to open a chat to ascertain its status. The forthcoming group chat enhancement builds upon this existing functionality.

The new indicator will not mimic previous designs that only displayed one person typing at a time, potentially obscuring activity from other members. Instead, it will explicitly show the numerical count of participants who are typing. This capability seeks to offer real-time insight into group activity before a user enters the conversation. The feature is expected to be particularly useful for active and busy groups, providing a clearer overview of ongoing interactions.

This specific enhancement applies solely to typing indications. The status for audio recording remains unchanged under this new development. The new typing indicator is currently in its beta phase, with future availability anticipated for a broader user base.
