Amazon has integrated an AI-powered assistant, Health AI, into One Medical’s app, the primary care provider acquired by Amazon in 2023. The tool provides 24/7 personalized health guidance drawing from medical records, and Amazon stated it follows HIPAA-compliant privacy and security practices.
Health AI explains lab results, assists with medication management, and schedules appointments. Amazon indicated the AI can analyze images and answer general and complex health questions while considering a patient’s health history, emphasizing it complements existing healthcare providers. The company also states Health AI recognizes situations requiring human clinical judgment.
Amazon affirmed that conversations with Health AI are not automatically added to medical records, and the company does not sell members’ protected health information. One Medical, which operates brick-and-mortar offices in various U.S. metropolitan areas, focuses on telehealth services offered through an annual subscription. Amazon Prime members receive a discount on this subscription.
This initiative follows Amazon’s prior investments in healthcare, including same-day prescription deliveries in specific markets and the development of prescription drug vending machines. Health AI’s introduction aligns with a broader trend of AI companies entering the healthcare sector; Google added an AI health coach to its Fitbit app last year, and OpenAI announced a health portal within ChatGPT in January.
