Threads hits 141 million daily users to claim the mobile throne from X

While Threads leads in the app stores, X remains the "microblogging champion" of the open web with 150 million daily desktop visits.

Meta’s Threads mobile application has recently surpassed X in daily active users on iOS and Android devices, according to a report from market intelligence firm A Similarweb. Threads reached 141.5 million daily active users on January 7, 2026, while X recorded 125 million daily active mobile users.

This growth for Threads reflects sustained trends rather than recent controversies surrounding X. California’s attorney general has initiated an investigation into X’s integrated AI, Grok, following reports of users generating non-consensual nude images, some involving minors. Investigations are also underway in the UK, EU, India, and Brazil. This situation also led to an increase in app installations for social networking startup Bluesky.

Threads’ increase in mobile usage may stem from cross-promotions on Meta’s Facebook and Instagram platforms, a focus on creators, and a rapid introduction of new features. Threads has deployed features such as interest-based communities, improved filters, direct messages, long-form text, disappearing posts, and is testing games. The sustained growth suggests increased habitual mobile usage.

Meta reported Threads had over 400 million monthly active users in August 2025 and 150 million daily active users in October 2025. Similarweb previously reported Threads closing the user gap with X on mobile devices last summer, citing 127.8% year-over-year growth by late June 2025.

X maintains a lead over Threads in the U.S., though the gap has narrowed significantly, with X’s U.S. daily active users halving over the past year. Furthermore, X continues to dominate web usage with approximately 150 million daily web visits; on January 13, X registered 145.4 million daily web visits. Threads recorded 8.5 million daily web visits across its Threads.com and Threads.net domains.
