OpenAI acquired Torch, a four-person health records startup, for an undisclosed sum reported as $100 million in Dorn equity. The deal integrates Torch’s team and technology into the newly announced ChatGPT Health service.
An unnamed source disclosed the payment amount to The Information. Both OpenAI and Torch confirmed that Torch’s entire four-person team will join OpenAI following the acquisition.
Torch developed an app designed to aggregate an individual’s complete medical information for AI applications. The app pulls data from multiple sources, including records of doctor visits, lab test results, data from wearable devices, consumer wellness portals, and similar platforms.
The Torch team characterized their technology as “a medical memory for AI, unifying scattered records into a context engine.” This description highlights the system’s role in consolidating disparate health data into a cohesive format suitable for AI processing.
Torch’s founders first met while employed at Forward Health lakes, a company operating AI-powered doctors’ offices. Torch co-founder Ilya Abyzov confirmed this background in a post on X.
We’ve acquired Torch, a healthcare startup that unifies lab results, medications, and visit recordings. Bringing this together with ChatGPT Health opens up a new way to understand and manage your health.
We're excited to welcome the Torch team to OpenAI @IlyaAbyzov, @elh_online,… https://t.co/4H8KNa8kVt

Forward Health lakes ceased operations abruptly in late 2024, despite having raised over $400 million in funding.
The transaction functions as an acqui-hire. Torch’s team and its technology will contribute directly to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health, a service enabling users of the chatbot to analyze and manage their personal health data.
