OpenAI is exploring integration of advertisements into ChatGPT conversations by prioritizing sponsored content over non-sponsored results, according to internal employee discussions reported by The Information.
Internal conversations among OpenAI staff addressed providing advertisers access to ChatGPT’s large user base. One specific discussion focused on granting sponsored chatbot results preferential treatment compared to non-sponsored ones, sources familiar with the matter told The Information. Employees considered scenarios where promotional content appears prominently in responses.
For instance, if a user queries the appropriate dosage of ibuprofen for a headache, the chatbot might deliver a promoted advertisement for Advil at the forefront. In such cases, information on the correct dosage could appear lower in the response or remain omitted entirely. This approach mirrors experiences in search engines, where users often scroll past multiple sponsored results to reach organic content, as noted in the employee talks.
ChatGPT reports a weekly active user base of 900 million individuals. This scale highlights the extensive reach available for any advertising features implemented within the platform.
OpenAI employees recognize potential user dissatisfaction with overt sponsored results. Additional internal discussions examined methods to incorporate advertisements without discouraging prolonged interactions. Staff weighed options to prevent users from perceiving corporate promotions as intrusive elements during extended chat sessions.
A mockup of an advertisement interface, shared with The Information, depicted sponsored content appearing only after a user’s second prompt. This design aims to delay exposure to promotional material, allowing initial queries to proceed without interruptions from ads early in the conversation.
In early December, a software researcher identified approximately a dozen lines of code in the beta version of ChatGPT’s Android application. These lines referenced elements such as “feature ads” and a “search ads carousel,” signaling ongoing experimentation with advertising functionalities.
An OpenAI spokesperson provided a statement to The Information: “As ChatGPT becomes more capable and widely used, we’re looking at ways to continue offering more intelligence to everyone. As part of this, we’re exploring what ads in our product could look like. People have a trusted relationship with ChatGPT, and any approach would be designed to respect that trust.”
