Telegram released its latest update last weekend, adding passkey support that enables users to log in via Face ID or Touch ID without SMS codes or passwords. The feature activates through device settings following Apple and Google’s 2022 announcement of the passkey standard.
In 2022, Apple and Google confirmed support for the passkey authentication standard. This prompted companies and app developers to integrate passkey functionality into their platforms. The standard allows biometric verification methods, including Face ID on Apple devices and Touch ID on compatible hardware, to replace traditional login credentials.
Telegram’s update incorporates passkey support alongside two other features: gift-purchase offers and audio playback within Stories. Users access the passkey option by navigating to Settings, then selecting Privacy and Security, followed by Passkey.
Upon tapping the “Create Passkey” button, Telegram generates a unique cryptographic passkey linked directly to the user’s account. The application stores this passkey securely on the user’s device, ensuring it remains tied to that specific account.
After creation, users sign in to Telegram sessions using Face ID or Touch ID. This process eliminates the requirement to enter an SMS verification code or a password during authentication.
Telegram supports syncing the passkey with password-management applications from providers such as iCloud and Google, as well as additional services.
