Apple ramps up pressure on iPhone users to install iOS 26.1

Apple updates the Software Update menu to promote iOS 26.1 as the primary choice, hinting at an approaching end to iOS 18 security support.

If you are one of the iPhone users still holding onto iOS 18, you might notice a change the next time you visit your Settings app. Apple has shifted its strategy to more aggressively encourage users to upgrade to its latest operating system, making iOS 26.1 the default recommended option for compatible devices.

Since the initial launch of the new operating system in September, Apple had displayed it as an optional upgrade at the bottom of the Software Update interface, allowing users to prioritize iOS 18 security patches.

However, that window of choice appears to be closing.

iOS 26.1 takes center stage in Settings

Starting today, the hierarchy in the Software Update menu has flipped. For users still running the older software:

  • iOS 26.1 is now displayed front and center as the primary update option.
  • Security updates for iOS 18 have been demoted to the bottom of the screen under an “Also Available” section.

While Apple is not yet strictly forcing the upgrade, this UI change is a clear “nudge” designed to boost adoption numbers. Many users have reportedly been hesitant to leave iOS 18 due to the major “Liquid Glass” design overhaul introduced in the new version, which significantly changes the look and feel of the iPhone interface.

How to install iOS 26.1

If you are ready to make the jump to the new interface and features, installing the update is straightforward. Before you begin, it is highly recommended to back up your device to iCloud or a computer.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Select Software Update.
  4. You should see iOS 26.1 prominently displayed at the top. Tap Update Now to begin the installation immediately, or Update Tonight to install it while you sleep.

Is this the end of the road for iOS 18 support?

This aggressive push toward iOS 26.1 signals that the grace period for the previous operating system may be ending soon. Since iOS 15, Apple has allowed users to stay on the prior-generation iOS for a limited time while still receiving security fixes.

However, history suggests this dual-support path is temporary. By making iOS 26.1 the prominent choice, Apple is likely preparing to phase out iOS 18 updates entirely in the coming months. Eventually, customers who want to keep their devices secure will have no choice but to transition to the newer software.

There is no going back

Before you hit that “Download and Install” button for iOS 26.1, it is crucial to remember that this process is irreversible. Apple does not provide a way to downgrade back to iOS 18 once the update is applied. If you are still unsure about the new Liquid Glass design, be aware that once you update, you are committed to the new interface.
