Elon Musk reiterated on X that Tesla will not produce electric motorcycles due to safety concerns, referencing a past personal incident.
Musk stated, “Never happening, as we can’t make motorcycles safe,” in response to an AI video featuring a simulated Tesla motorcycle posted on his X platform. He attributed his stance to a near-fatal incident involving a truck while riding a motorcycle in his youth. Musk clarified his views were directed primarily at street motorcycles, noting, “Dirt bikes are safe if you ride carefully, as you can’t be smashed by a truck.”

For @CommunityNotes, my near death experience was on a road bike.

Tesla’s Autopilot features have drawn criticism for incidents involving motorcyclists. Several fatalities have occurred where Tesla vehicles operating under Autopilot struck motorcycles. Some suggest the vision-based self-driving system may misinterpret the narrower taillight spacing of cruiser motorcycles as a distant car, potentially explaining repeated rear-end collisions with motorcyclists.
Despite Tesla’s absence, the electric motorcycle industry continues to expand. Established manufacturers including Honda, BMW, and Kawasaki are introducing production models. Companies like Zero and LiveWire are advancing the segment with enhanced performance and increased dealer support. Smaller companies, such as Ryvid, address demand for commuter motorcycles. Asian manufacturers, including Yadea and NIU, are contributing to rapid global adoption through affordable scooter offerings.
