Google has begun a wide rollout of the Power Saving Mode feature in Google Maps for Pixel 10 series phones, announced in the November Pixel Drop. This mode extends battery life during navigation by utilizing a low-power interface on the Always-On Display, targeting display-related power consumption.
The Power Saving Mode addresses the high energy demands of turn-by-turn navigation in Google Maps. Navigation typically requires continuous access to GPS for location tracking and mobile data for route updates, alongside a screen that remains active and brightly lit throughout the journey. These elements contribute significantly to battery depletion, particularly during extended drives. By introducing this mode, Google focuses on mitigating the power usage from the display itself, allowing users to maintain directional guidance without excessive drain on their device’s battery.
At the core of this feature is the new Android capability known as AOD Min Mode. This enables Google Maps to operate directly on the Always-On Display, which is designed for minimal power consumption. The interface simplifies to black-and-white visuals, operating at reduced brightness levels and a lower refresh rate. Such adjustments ensure that only essential navigation details, such as the next turn, remain visible. This setup prevents the full screen from activating unnecessarily, conserving energy while keeping the user informed of their route.
The efficiency of AOD Min Mode becomes especially pronounced on the OLED screens equipped in the Pixel 10 series. OLED technology allows individual pixels to turn off completely when displaying black, unlike LCD screens that require constant backlight. In the black-and-white mode, the predominance of dark areas means many pixels deactivate, leading to substantial power savings. Google reports that Pixel 10 users can achieve up to four additional hours of navigation time with this mode enabled, compared to standard usage.
Despite these advantages, the Power Saving Mode includes specific operational constraints. It functions exclusively in driving mode, providing turn-by-turn directions for vehicular travel. Support does not extend to navigation for walking, biking, or public transit options, limiting its applicability to scenarios beyond driving. Additionally, the mode operates solely in portrait orientation, with no compatibility for landscape viewing, which may affect usability depending on how users hold their devices during navigation.
Users of Pixel 10 phones will encounter the Power Saving Mode option appearing automatically in Google Maps as part of the ongoing rollout. To access and enable it, the process involves the following steps:
- Open the Google Maps application on the Pixel 10 device.
- Navigate to the Settings menu within the app.
- Scroll down to the Navigation section.
- Locate the Driving options subsection, where the Power Saving Mode toggle appears.
Furthermore, when users request driving directions, a contextual pop-up card displays information about the feature. This card provides a brief explanation and includes a “Learn more” link that directs to the Driving options settings page for further details and activation.
To initiate the mode during an active navigation session, users follow a straightforward sequence. First, they start turn-by-turn driving navigation in Google Maps as usual. Next, they press the power button on their Pixel 10 phone to turn off the display. The navigation then transitions to the low-power mode on the lock screen, continuing to show essential guidance via the Always-On Display. To disengage the mode and return to the full interface, users tap the screen or press the power button again.
Currently, the Power Saving Mode remains limited to the Pixel 10 series. Google has not indicated any intentions to extend this feature to previous Pixel models or devices running other Android variants, keeping it as an exclusive enhancement for the latest hardware.
