OpenAI has launched a free version of ChatGPT tailored for K-12 teachers, available until June 2027, to enable educators to create classroom materials securely and familiarize themselves with AI tools.
The tool, named ChatGPT for Teachers, provides unlimited messages using the GPT-5.1 Auto model. It includes connectors to other applications, allowing integration with educational software. Users can upload files for analysis or reference in prompts. Image generation capabilities support the creation of visual aids for lessons. Memory features retain context across conversations, similar to the consumer edition of ChatGPT.
This version ensures compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, which regulates the storage and protection of student information in schools. Such adherence makes the platform suitable for institutional environments where data privacy is paramount.
OpenAI designed ChatGPT for Teachers to facilitate collaboration among educators. Teachers can share individual chats with colleagues to exchange ideas or resources. New sessions automatically include suggestions based on how other teachers have utilized the tool, drawing from aggregated usage patterns to inspire prompt ideas.
The company positions this release as a means for educators to generate teaching materials and “get comfortable using AI on their own terms.” Prior to this initiative, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Edu, which allows educational institutions to distribute access to ChatGPT in a manner comparable to providing email accounts. This setup enables schools to manage and deploy the AI tool across their networks efficiently.
Additionally, all versions of ChatGPT incorporate a Study Mode feature. This mode directs the AI to deliver responses with step-by-step explanations, aiding in instructional processes by breaking down complex topics into manageable parts.
