Liberty Media CEO Derek Chang discussed the new Apple partnership for Formula 1 U.S. streaming rights during an exclusive CNBC interview on Money Movers, hosted by Sara Eisen, ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

The interview focused on the recently announced five-year deal granting Apple exclusive U.S. streaming rights for Formula 1 races and related content. Chang explained the evolution of the media landscape driven by technological advancements. He noted that traditional viewing has expanded beyond limited broadcast slots. In his words, the shift involves moving from a one-and-a-half-hour Sunday race window to an always-on, always-present format that increases reach and engagement.

Chang emphasized Apple’s role in this transformation. He stated that Apple’s technological capabilities would improve the overall product. This includes enhancements to content delivery and the fan experience. Such improvements aim to boost the sport’s brand and raise awareness among audiences. The partnership aligns with broader changes in sports media, where digital platforms enable continuous interaction rather than isolated events.

Addressing potential expansion, Chang responded to questions about Apple pursuing global streaming rights for Formula 1. He indicated active involvement from Apple in these areas. Discussions are underway across multiple fronts, though the process remains in early stages. Chang described the collaboration as a strong partnership with possibilities for extension beyond the United States. He clarified that no specific details have been finalized at this point.

The conversation also covered the success of F1 The Movie, a production tied to the sport’s growing popularity. Chang highlighted its record-breaking box office performance. The film achieved this milestone both for lead actor Brad Pitt and within the category of sports movies. Released in theaters in August, it became available for purchase or rental shortly after. This theatrical debut contributed to its commercial achievements, drawing significant attention to Formula 1 narratives.

F1 The Movie will premiere for streaming on Apple TV on December 12. This follows its initial availability for digital purchase or rental. Apple TV operates as a subscription service priced at $12.99 per month. The platform hosts a range of original content, including acclaimed series such as Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo. These shows have garnered viewership through diverse storytelling and production quality, complementing sports-related offerings like the upcoming F1 film.

The timing of Chang’s interview coincides with heightened interest in Formula 1, particularly with the Las Vegas Grand Prix scheduled for the weekend. This event underscores the sport’s expansion in key markets, where streaming partnerships play a central role in accessibility and growth.
