Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman states in his Power On newsletter that Apple has largely written off the Mac Pro, with no plans for a new release anytime soon. This decision stems from the company’s shift in professional desktop strategy toward the Mac Studio, following the Mac Pro’s last update in 2023.

The Mac Pro received its most recent hardware refresh in 2023, incorporating the M2 Ultra chip as its primary processor. Gurman notes that Apple’s approach to the Mac Pro does not appear poised for alteration in the near term. This stagnation reflects broader changes in Apple’s development priorities for high-end silicon-based systems.

Apple has ceased development on the M4 Ultra chip, which was originally intended for integration into an updated Mac Pro model. Gurman reports that the specific Mac Pro variant designed to feature this chip has been canceled entirely. As a result, resources and focus have shifted away from advancing the Mac Pro lineup.

Is Tim Cook really leaving Apple?

The subsequent high-end chip in Apple’s Apple Silicon architecture will be the M5 Ultra. According to Gurman’s sources, this processor is presently allocated exclusively to the Mac Studio, with no provisions for inclusion in the Mac Pro. This allocation underscores Apple’s current emphasis on the Mac Studio as the pinnacle of its professional desktop offerings.

Gurman indicates that the Mac Pro will not undergo a substantial update in 2026. He quotes internal perspectives with the statement, “From what I’ve heard inside the company, Apple has largely written off the Mac Pro.” This view aligns with sentiments within Apple that position the Mac Studio as the embodiment of both current and prospective professional desktop capabilities.

The report avoids a definitive declaration that Apple will never introduce a new Mac Pro. Nevertheless, the outlined developments position the Mac Studio as the primary option for users seeking Apple’s most potent desktop configuration at this juncture.
