Passkey migration to x.com leaves many X users stuck in login loops

The forced migration stems from X’s retirement of the legacy twitter.com domain, which passkeys were originally tied to and could not automatically transfer.

X users are experiencing account lockout issues and login loops following a mandatory two-factor authentication change implemented on October 24.

The company required users relying on passkeys or hardware security keys for two-factor authentication to re-enroll using the x.com domain. X previously announced that accounts would be locked after November 10, unless users re-enrolled or selected an alternative two-factor authentication method. Since this deadline, numerous users have reported being locked out of their accounts. Attempts to re-enroll passkeys or security keys have reportedly resulted in error messages or persistent login loops.

This development is the latest in a series of issues for X, previously Twitter, following its acquisition by Elon Musk for $44 billion. The social media platform has undergone significant layoffs and encountered multiple controversies since the ownership transition. X did not provide a response to a request for comment regarding these account issues.
