Apple is developing numerous satellite-powered features for its iPhone, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
Currently, iPhone models offer satellite connectivity for emergency texting, emergency services calls, and roadside assistance. Planned enhancements include an Application Programming Interface (API) to enable third-party applications to integrate satellite connections. Additionally, a new version of Apple Maps is reportedly in development, allowing navigation without cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity. Messaging capabilities are expected to expand to include sending photos via satellite. Support for “natural usage” aims to facilitate satellite connection even when a phone is not directly pointed at the sky.
These features are designed to extend iPhone usability in areas lacking traditional cellular network coverage. Another reported development, cited by The Information, involves upgrading existing 5G networks through satellite integration, potentially boosting coverage. Basic satellite features are anticipated to remain free, with advanced support requiring carrier subscriptions. Apple’s satellite partner, Globalstar, reportedly requires infrastructure improvements for these upgrades, with Apple contributing to the financing.
